Endoscopic Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)
Endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a minimally invasive spine surgery technique that is used to treat a variety of spinal conditions affecting the low back, including degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, and spinal stenosis. This procedure is similar to traditional transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), but it utilizes smaller incisions and specialized surgical tools to minimize disruption to surrounding tissues.
During an endoscopic TLIF procedure, Dr. Baig will make a small incision near the affected area of the spine and insert a tube-like device called an endoscope which allows him to visualize the spine and perform the procedure with greater precision. Dr. Baig will then remove the damaged disc material and insert a spacer to help restore the height and stability of the spinal column. The procedure may also involve the placement of screws or other hardware to provide additional support.
Compared to traditional TLIF, the endoscopic approach has several benefits. Because the incision is smaller and there is less disruption to surrounding tissues, patients typically experience less pain and have a faster recovery time. Additionally, the risk of complications such as infection, bleeding, and nerve damage is reduced.
Not all patients are candidates for endoscopic TLIF, as the decision to use this technique will depend on the patient’s individual case. Candidates for endoscopic TLIF may include patients with degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, or spinal stenosis who have not found relief from conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections. Traditional TLIF may be recommended for patients who require a more extensive spinal fusion procedure, or for those who are not good candidates for endoscopic surgery. Traditional TLIF involves a larger incision and more disruption to surrounding tissues, but may be necessary. After a thorough consultation, examination, and imaging, Dr. Baig will be able to tell you whether an endoscopic or traditional approach is right for you.
