Endoscopic Facet Rhizotomy
Endoscopic facet rhizotomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic back pain caused by degenerative facet joints. The procedure involves using a small endoscope to provide a clear view of the joint and nerves, allowing Dr. Baig to selectively sever the pain-causing nerves. This procedure is designed to reduce pain and is typically recommended for patients who have not found relief from more conservative treatments.
Candidates are patients who suffer from chronic back pain and have been diagnosed with degenerative facet joint disease (arthritis of the spine). Patients who have tried non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or injections without success may be suitable candidates for the procedure.
Before performing the procedure, Dr. Baig will perform diagnostic imaging tests to ensure that the patient is a suitable candidate for endoscopic facet rhizotomy. During the procedure, Dr. Baig makes a small incision and inserts a tiny camera called an endoscope into the affected facet joint. The endoscope provides a clear view of the joint and nerves, allowing Dr. Baig to selectively burn the pain-causing nerves using a radiofrequency probe. This procedure reduces pain and improves mobility by reducing inflammation in the affected area.
Compared to traditional facet rhizotomy, endoscopic facet rhizotomy offers several advantages. The procedure is minimally invasive, resulting in less tissue damage, scarring, and a shorter recovery time. Patients experience less pain and discomfort, and there is a reduced risk of complications such as infection and bleeding. Furthermore, endoscopic facet rhizotomy provides a clearer view of the surgical site, allowing for more precise surgery and a better chance of successful outcomes.
Patients who are not candidates for endoscopic facet rhizotomy include those with severe spinal instability, active infections, bleeding disorders, and certain types of tumors. Additionally, individuals who have not responded well to conservative treatments, such as physical therapy and medications, may not be considered for this procedure. Dr. Baig will be able to determine if endoscopic facet rhizotomy is appropriate for your specific case.
