Endoscopic Discectomy

An endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is typically performed on patients who suffer from a herniated or bulging disc, which can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the back, neck, or legs. Endoscopic discectomy is a modern alternative to traditional open surgery, which often involves a larger incision, more significant tissue damage, and longer recovery times.

Candidates for an endoscopic discectomy are patients who have tried non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or injections, but have not experienced significant relief from their symptoms. The procedure is also suitable for patients with specific types of disc herniation, such as those that cause nerve compression or irritation.

During an endoscopic discectomy, Dr. Baig will make a small incision in the patient’s skin, typically less than half an inch, and insert an endoscope, a tiny camera, and surgical instruments through the incision. The camera provides a clear view of the surgical site, allowing the surgeon to remove the herniated or bulging disc material that is causing the patient’s symptoms. Once the procedure is complete, the incision is closed with sutures or steri-strips, and the patients will go home the same day.

Compared to traditional open surgery, an endoscopic discectomy offers several advantages. The procedure is minimally invasive, which means less tissue damage, a smaller incision, and reduced scarring. Patients typically experience less pain and discomfort, and recovery times are shorter. In addition, the risk of complications, such as infection and bleeding, is lower with endoscopic discectomy than with open surgery. Endoscopic discectomy is not suitable for all patients, including some with severe spinal stenosis, large herniated discs, severe nerve compression, previous spine surgery, or spinal instability. Dr. Baig can let you know after a thorough examination of your case whether or not you are an appropriate candidate for endoscopic discectomy.
